G. CAMERANO & FIGLI
Barolo, Piemonte
The Camerano winery is located in the heart of the "Old Langa" region, within the village of Barolo. Founded in 1875, Camerano is the second
oldest wine producer within the commune of Barolo. The family has been producing traditional, classic Piemontese wines for 5 generations on
their estate-owned vineyards.
Using time honored, ultra-traditional methods, handed down from one generation to the next, the Camerano family has remained out of the limelight
producing and selling wines only locally, at their cellar door, and to private customers in Italy. Truly a family owned and run
operation, with the 1995 vintage, son Vittorio assumed wine making responsibility from his father and the family began exporting small quantities
of their wine for the first time. In Italy, the wines of Camerano are sold only within the tiny village of Barolo and nowhere else in
Italy.
From extreme, low yield vines, the Camerano Barolos spend ten to fifteen days macerating and are aged in old 25, 30 and 50 hectolitre
barrels. The Camerano Barolos are always "young" compared to the other Barolos of the same age, as their wines need time and patience to
develop. On entering the cellars, tradition-conscious visitors are immediately struck by the oak casks, the equipment from days gone by, and
the labels showing historic vintages of Camerano wines. When you open a bottle, a true Barolo, King of all Italian wines, reveals "himself"
slowly, allowing a view to the "offspring" of the terroir of Barolo, along with the culture and history of the Camerano family.
The Camerano family has owned the perfectly exposed San Lorenzo Block of Cannubi since the early 1800s. The San Lorenzo name comes from an
Italian Saint who is celebrated on August 10, a night when frequently, the story goes; one can see falling stars in the sky. Hence the label,
on which Galileo is seen staring toward the heavens. The "Gold Label" Barolo is sourced from the Camerano family's perfectly exposed, Terlo
Vineyard, which overlooks the village of Barolo.
Wines Produced:
Dolcetto
d'Alba
Barbera d'Alba
Barolo "Terlo" "Gold Label"
Barolo "Cannubi San Lorenzo"
The Camerano family follows the same philosophical commitment to their Dolcetto and Barbera, as they do to their Barolos. Time honored,
traditional methods of vinification and style are employed resulting in classically styled wines, much the same as they were produced in
generations past, showcasing in the purest sense, the unique, terroir of the finest vineyard sites in the commune of Barolo.
Camerano Dolcetto d'Alba - Dolcetto is normally planted in areas on the fringes of the prime vineyard areas of the five primary Barolo communes
around the city of Alba or on the "wrong" side of the hillsides of the Alba region. They are virtually never found alongside the prized Nebbiolo
vines in vineyards that are normally dedicated to producing grapes for Barolo. The Camerano, Dolcetto d'Alba is planted in the middle of their
estate grown Terlo vineyard, where the entire area's vineyards are otherwise devoted by Camerano and every neighboring vineyard, exclusively to the
cultivation of Nebbiolo for Barolo. The result is Dolcetto that is full bodied, rich and one of the most stunning examples of Dolcetto
produced in Piemonte. The Camerano Dolcetto d'Alba is packed with rich aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, violets and
red plums. Deeply colored with a bold, fruit character, this is classic Dolcetto; full-bodied, richly-flavored and complex with velvety
tannins and a long, supple finish.
Total production: 650 cases
Camerano Barbera d'Alba - The Barbera d'Alba exemplifies classically structured Barbera with great texture, concentration and grip on the
palette. It is packed with robust, complex, ripe plum, tart black cherry and black currant aromas and flavors. Fresh and vibrant, with
bright, raspberry acidity, this classic Barbera displays smooth, sweet tannins and a lush, lingering finish.
Total production: 375 cases
Camerano Barolo "Terlo Gold Label" - Produced on estate holdings in the "Terlo" vineyard overlooking the village of Barolo, the Camerano "Terlo
Gold Label" Barolo is quintessential, classic Barolo with aromas and flavors of dark berries, licorice, forest floor characters, truffles, violets
and exotic spices. It is expansive on the palate with great complexity, depth of flavor and fine, noble
tannins.
Total production: 500 - 600 cases
Camerano Barolo "Cannubi San Lorenzo" - The Cannubi Vineyard, famous for centuries, produces wines of a fragrance, both generous and complex, with
ripe fruit married to woodsy notes. The palate is elegant, full and relatively approachable when young, with unusual integration of deep, supple
berry notes over a substantial tannic structure of great aristocratic finesse and longevity. The Cannubi "San Lorenzo" Barolo presents
exquisite aromas and flavors of ripe, dark cherries, minerals, rose petals, anise and exotic spices. Multi-dimensional and seamless in the
mouth, this magnificent wine has superb concentration, aristocratic finesse and a regal, purity of flavor.
Total production: 400 cases
Cannubi, also known as Cannubio, is derived from the Italian word for union, which best describes the rare hybrid of Barolo's two distinct soil
types - Tortonian and Helvetian - marrying their respective characteristics of perfume and elegance with structure and concentration. The
prestigious Cannubi vineyard lies where three communes of the appellation converge: Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra. The Cannubi
vineyard extends north and eastward, overlooking the commune of Barolo. The reputation of the vineyard has become legendary; with the label of the
oldest remaining bottle of Piedmontese wine bearing the name Cannubi dated at 1752.
